Rafah Crossing, the Gaza-Egypt border that was supposed to open over the weekend, remains closed for the third straight day, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said on Monday, Nov. 6.

During a press briefing at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3, DFA Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega revealed that foreigners, including Filipinos, from Gaza Strip won’t be able to cross the Rafah Crossing border after it closed over the weekend because of a spate of new attacks.
“Unfortunately, we did announce that they would start going home but this is beyond our control. The border is still closed,” the official lamented.
“Rafah border is still closed, but they are talks going on how to open it, of course. And we will be among the first to leave once it is opened again,” he said.
“I can’t say when it will happen other than it’s not today. It will be closed for the third straight day,” De Vega added.
The batch of Filipino evacuees, including 20 Filipinos, should have crossed the Rafah crossing border on Saturday, but this was delayed because of the recent attacks there.
The official earlier explained that Israel has accused Hamas of attacking the border, while Hamas claimed that Israel was attacking convoys headed to the border.
Meanwhile, the fifth batch of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) arrived from Israel via Etihad Airways flight EY 424 at NAIA T3 at 3:20 p.m. on Monday.
This batch included 22 returning OFWs and one infant. Of the 22, 19 are caregivers while the remaining 3 are hotel workers.
The remains of OFW Mary Grace Prodigo-Cabrera was also brought back by her sister Mary June Prodigo, who was part of this latest group of returnees.
Prodigo was one of four Filipino caregivers who died on Oct. 7, the first day of the attacks launched by Palestinian militant group Hamas against Israel.
A sixth batch composed of 42 OFWs from Israel is scheduled to arrive on Tuesday, Nov. 7.
The arrival of these two batches will bring the total number of OFWs who came back home from Israel to 184.
