CHR starts own probe on killing of broadcaster Juan Jumalon
The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has started its own investigation on the killing last Sunday morning, Nov. 5, of radio broadcaster Juan T. Jumalon, also known as "DJ Johnny Walker," in Misamis Occidental.
Jumalon was broadcasting live over radio station 94.7 Calamba Gold FM located in his residence at barangay Don Bernardo A. Neri in Calamba town when a lone gunman pumped bullets into his head and fled.
Reports stated that the attack was captured live on Jumalong's program. The livestream also showed the attacker grabbing Jumalon 's gold necklace before fleeing. Jumalon was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
Earlier, President Marcos has condemned the killing and ordered the Philippine National Police (PNP) to investigate and the prosecute the perpetrator or perpetrators.
Also, the Department of Justice (DOJ) had said it will conduct a swift investigation and will prosecute the offenders to the full extent of the law.
The Calamba town's police station had started its own probe and had launched dragnet operations and checkpoints to apprehend the suspects. It had even released a police sketch of the alleged killer.
In a statement, the CHR said: "CHR condemns this brazen act of arbitrarily depriving a person of his right to life. CHR expresses further concern as the victim was a journalist -- fourth killing under the current administration and 199th since 1986," the CHR said but it have no additional details.
"Our independent investigation also seeks to determine if the killing is work-related. We recognize, however, the chilling effect of this violent attack that continues to make the country a dangerous place for journalists," it said.
