Veteran radio broadcaster shot dead live on air in Misamis Occidental


CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – A veteran radio broadcaster was shot dead live on air in Calamba, Misamis Occidental on Sunday morning, November 5.

Police identified the victim as 57-year-old Juan Jumalon.

Initial investigation said two men arrived in the victim’s home-based radio station 94.7 Calamba Gold FM in Barangay Don Bernardo A. Neri reportedly to make a very important announcement on air.

One of them drew their firearms at the person who opened the gate. 

The other went to the booth where Jumalon was airing his program and shot the victim also known as “Johnny Walker” in the lower lip with the bullet exiting at the back of his head. 

The gunman took the victim's necklace before fleeing.

.Jumalon was taken to the Calamba District Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

The Police Regional Office-10 condemned the killing of Jumalon and is set to create a Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) for the speedy resolution of the case.

PRO-10 Director Police Brig. Gen. Ricardo Layug Jr. said they are now conducting a thorough investigation to identify the suspects and the motive to give justice to the victim.

“We extend our full support to the media community and underscore the vital collaboration among law enforcement, the community, and all the stakeholders in ensuring the safety of all the media practitioners in the region,” Layug said in a statement on Sunday.

The Misamis Occidental Police Provincial Office also released a statement on Sunday appealing to the public, especially those who have knowledge of the incident, to report to the police for the speedy resolution of the case.
