Louna Ozar and Favour Onoh led the way as University of the Philippines exacted sweet revenge over Ateneo in convincing style, 71-48, in the UAAP Season 86 women’s basketball tournament on Sunday, Nov. 5, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
The Fighting Maroons got back against their first-round tormentor in timely fashion as they clinched at least a playoff chance for a Final Four spot.
UP hiked its record to eight wins against two losses to remain as the second seed.
Ozar led all scorers with 17 points in an 8-of-10 shooting from the inside, while Onoh delivered a double-double performance of 13 points and 12 rebounds.
In the first round, the Blue Eagles handed the then undefeated Fighting Maroons their first defeat of the season last Oct. 21.
From a slim 26-23 advantage, UP went on a telling 10-0 run anchored by Kaye Pasquera and Rhea Sanchez to greet the halftime break.
From then on, UP gained the momentum good enough to help them secure the victory.
"Really proud of them. We committed ourselves to our game plan and the only thing that we talked about is that they're gonna give all their best every minute that they will play and it really showed," said UP head coach Paul Ramos.
MVP frontrunner Kacey Dela Rosa was held to a single-digit production of just nine points while ultimately making up for it on the other end with 16 rebounds which also just went for naught.
Jhazmin Joson, who stereed Ateneo in its first-round win over UP, only scored six markers this time.
Meanwhile, Junize Calago paced the Blue Eagles with a double-double showing of her own with 15 markers and 12 rebounds.
Ateneo slid 6-4 in the standings to stay at the fourth spot.
