CEBU CITY – The Armed Forces Visayas Command (Viscom) did not let up in its anti-insurgency campaign last month despite the enormous task of securing the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections.

THE Visayas Command reported that several members of the New People’s Army surrendered and various firearms were recovered during last month’s anti-insurgency operations in the Visayas. (Viscom)
Viscom reported that in October, eight government-initiated encounters took place throughout the Visayas, leading to the deaths of three members of the New People’s Army (NPA).
The Viscom said 25 NPA rebels surrendered last month, 19 of whom are regular members while six are from the Militia ng Bayan.
Sixty-one Communist Party of the Philippines-NPA (CPP-NPA) supporters renounced support to the communist movement and pledged their allegiance to the government, Viscom said.
A total of 30 assorted firearms along with six anti-personnel mines were seized by government troops during the period.
“Defeating the CPP-NPA in the Visayas region remains on top of our list amidst our mandate to support the Commission on Elections in ensuring the success of the recently concluded BSKE. Our efforts against the CPP-NPA will never falter, as we respond to the call of our people for just and lasting peace in the entire region,” said Lt. Gen. Benedict Arevalo, commander of Viscom.
Arevalo lauded troops who stayed committed in the government’s efforts to end the local communist armed conflict in the region.
He urged those who are still with the CPP-NPA to choose the path of peace and return to the folds of the law.
“Our efforts will be sustained and relentless. We will never stop until justice is served and just and lasting peace is achieved. As for the few remaining members of the CPP-NPA, Christmas is fast approaching, just imagine your families and loved ones and how happy they will be to celebrate the season with you. Choose the path of peace and return to the folds of the law now, while you still can,” Arevalo said.
