Rookie Reinhard Jumamoy made the most of his minutes as National University kept defending champion Ateneo at bay, 65-61, in the second round of the UAAP Season 86 men’s basketball tournament on Saturday, Nov. 4, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
The Bulldogs bounced back in convincing style to rise 8-2 in the standings.
From down 22-33 in the first half, NU snatched the lead back which was largely thanks to Jumamoy, who poured 13 points to greet the halftime break with a perfect 5-of-5 shooting and eventually finished with a game-high 21 points.
Jumamoy made his first eight attempts, while Jake Figueroa scored 11 of his 18 points in the fourth period to steer the Bulldogs to the victory.
NU briefly held a 60-53 advantage in the fourth period before Ateneo got back on its feet and responded with an 8-0 counter-attack capped by a Sen Quitevis layup, with 2:09 remaining.
Trailing by just a single point with 1:07 to go, Figueroa showed steely nerves and sank a lead-taking triple from the corner, 61-60.
The Bulldogs held on to the win as Figueroa iced the game from the line after sinking both of his freebies.
“Good win for us. Hard earned win kasi second round na everybody is stepping up, all teams stepped up. Last time [I talked about the] lack of effort. We really emphasized ‘yong effort na word sa conversation namin as a team para at least mapunan ‘yong pagkukulang. Good thing napunta sa amin yong favor in the last minute,” said NU head coach Jeff Napa.
Joseph Obasa flirted with a double-double on the losing end with 11 points and nine rebounds, while Kai Ballungay added 10 points.
Ateneo hasn't found its groove in the second round yet following three straight losses. The reigning champions fell deeper into a 4-6 slate.
