Radio broadcaster shot dead in MisOcc; PNP forms probe team


The Philippine National Police (PNP) is now conducting a thorough investigation into the killing of a radio broadcaster who was shot dead inside his house in Calamba, Misamis Occidental.

In a statement, Northern Mindanao Police regional director Brig. Gen. Ricardo Layug, Jr. said a special investigation task group (SITG) will be created to facilitate the conduct of investigation into the killing of Juan Tumpag Jumalon, known as Johnny Walker.

Jumalon, 57, and an employee of the Calamba Water District, was shot dead inside the radio booth located in his house in Barangay Don Bernardo A/ Neri at around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 5.

“Initial investigation revealed that while the victim was working inside his own Radio Station 94.7 Calamba Gold FM located at his residence, an unidentified person went inside and without apparent reason, drew his firearm and shot the victim hitting his lower lip,” the police report read.

Layug said the victim was declared dead at the Calamba District Hospital where he was taken after the gun attack.

He said follow-up operations are now being conducted against the gunman.

“We extend our full support to the media community and underscore the vital collaboration among law enforcement, the community, and all the stakeholders in ensuring the safety of all the media practitioners in the region,” said Layug.
