The family of Regidor Esguerra, 46, who works as a missionary for Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders), informed local officials that he was unharmed and had taken refuge in Cairo, Egypt.
Esguerra’s mother, Budz, had earlier sought the help of Mayor Tessa Constantino here for the possible repatriation of her son.
Constantino had established contact with Esguerra’s wife, Italian Barbara Gencia, who also works for the international humanitarian group, who reported through Facebook messenger that her husband had sought refuge in Egypt.
Esguerra was deployed in Gaza and was reported missing when the conflict between Hamas and Israeli forces erupted.
Budz said her son was able to cross the border safe on his way to Egypt amid the intense fighting between Hamas and Israeli forces.
Constantino said the local government is willing to help facilitate in the repatriation of Esguerra should the nurse decide to return home.
