Senators lauded the recent move of President Marcos to issue an executive order and several proclamations that grant amnesty to rebels and insurgents.

In a statement, Sen. Jinggoy Estrada said that the agreement to resume the peace talks between the Philippine government and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) was a major stride towards progress. 

He added that the signing of a joint communique demonstrates the readiness of both parties to exchange ideas and reach a consensus, disregarding their disparities for the betterment of the country.

"This is a positive development in finding a peaceful resolution to the decades-long armed conflict, especially with President Marcos Jr.'s move to grant amnesty to rebels," he said.
 
"The road to lasting peace is undoubtedly challenging, but the resumption of talks opens avenues for mutual understanding, compromise, and, ultimately, resolving long-standing issues," he added.

Estrada said that they will closely monitor the peace negotiations to ensure that any agreement reached reflects the principles of justice, inclusivity, and reconciliation, and upholds the interests of the Filipino people.

Meanwhile, Senator Grace Poe says that the grant of amnesty strikes a powerful chord with the Filipinos who shun violence and conflict.

"Rebel groups waging armed struggle out of their political conviction will no longer feel the sword hanging over their heads that they could be arrested or charged any time," she said.

"We hope the amnesty program will provide a comprehensive package for the rebels, including training, livelihood and employment opportunities," she added.

Poe stated that this will fully reintegrate the rebels into mainstream society as peaceful, productive, and law-abiding citizens.
