PNP records higher poll-related violent incidents for BSKE 2023 with 29 dead
Cases of election-related violence and other incidents in this year’s barangay elections went up by around 162 percent compared to the barangay poll-related incidents in 2018, data from the Philippine National Police (PNP) disclosed on Thursday, Nov. 30.
From 40 validated election-related incidents in the 2018 barangay elections, the final tally of the PNP for the 94-day duration of the election period for this year's elections is 105, or an increase of 65 incidents.
Five more cases are still being validated while 221 incidents were found to be non-barangay election related.
In the same final tally, a total of 29 people were killed while 100 others were injured.
Based on the PNP data, more than half of the validated election-related incidents happened in Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) with 57, followed by Northern Mindanao with 15 incidents.
Eastern Visayas and Ilocos Region have six poll-related incidents each.
On the other hand, a total of 2,672 people were arrested while around 7,000 firearms were confiscated, surrendered and deposited for safekeeping in various police stations and offices across the country during the gun ban period.
Of the figure, a total of 2,087 firearms were confiscated from the arrested violators composed of private individuals, members of law enforcement agencies, security guards and even government employees.
