Magnitude 4.9 quake jolts Camarines Sur — Phivolcs


A 4.9-magnitude earthquake jolted Camarines Sur at 3:18 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 30, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The earthquake, which occurred at a shallow depth of 4 kilometers, had its epicenter 7 kilometers southeast of Calabanga, Camarines Sur.

Phivolcs said the tremor was felt at Intensity V (strong) in Tinambac, Camarines Sur.

Intensity IV (moderately strong) was also felt in Naga, Calamigan, and Calabanga in Camarines Sur.

Phivolcs said the quake was "weak" at Intensity III in Iriga City, Bula, and Presentacion in Camarines Sur and Lopez in Quezon province,

It was also "slightly felt" at Intensity II in Goa and Cabusao in Camarines Sur; Mercedes, Daet, and Basud in Camarines Norte; and Guinayangan in Quezon province.

Meanwhile, it was "scarcely perceptible" at Intensity I in Legazpi City, Albay.

Its instruments also recorded the earthquake at Intensity VI in Tinambac, Camarines Sur; Intensity IV in Pili, Camarines, Sur; Intensity III in Pasacao, Camarines Sur; Intensity II in Guinayangan, Quezon; Intensity I inTabaco, Albay; Jose Panganiban, Camarines Norte; and Polillo, Quezon.

Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

However, it does not expect aftershocks to occur.
