Israel to find ways for Pinoys in Gaza to cross border — envoy
Israel’s ambassador in Manila said Friday, Nov. 3, that the Israeli government is yet to figure out how it could help in the departure of foreign nationals still trapped in Gaza amid Tel Aviv’s continuous bombardment due to its war with Hamas.
As the first batch of foreign-passport holders, including two Filipinos, crossed to Egypt, from the Palestinian territory two days ago, Ambassador Ilan Fluss gave assurance that the Israeli government would do its "best to facilitate the safe exit of Filipinos."
"The other day, it was the first group that was able to leave. And we still have to see how it works, and how it will continue," Fluss said in an online briefing.
"We will do our efforts that it will happen today or tomorrow," he added.
Fluss disclosed that "there are also other players in this complicated situation" in the crossing of repatriates from Gaza to Egypt.
He said "Israel is not controlling that border, but certainly," he said the Israeli government will do everything to facilitate the safe exit of Filipinos from Gaza.
On Thursday, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirmed that two Filipino doctors from humanitarian group Doctors Without Borders managed to depart from Gaza, which has been under Israeli blockade for nearly a month now.
The agency said that DFA Secretary Enrique Manalo on Wednesday reached out to his Israeli and Egyptian counterparts, Eli Cohen and Sameh Shoukry, "to once again request their governments to issue the necessary permits for the safe passage of our countrymen."
Then on Thursday, DFA added that Manalo requested a call with Cohen "to follow up his letter and appeal to ensure as soon as possible" the exit of Filipinos across the Rafah border. The move was confirmed by Fluss Friday.
Citing reports from the Philippine Embassy in Jordan, DFA said the latest number of Filipinos in Gaza who want to leave and are just waiting for the signal to cross the border is 115.
Only 19 Filipinos remain undecided, including a Filipino nun, it added.
"The DFA remains committed in ensuring the protection of kababayans who are caught in this unfortunate situation," the agency said.
