House Speaker Martin Romualdez believes that Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr.'s wealth of experience in the private sector will be invaluable to the latter's new role as Department of Agriculture (DA) secretary.
"I warmly welcome the appointment of Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. [at] the helm of the [DA]," Romualdez said in statement Friday afternoon, Nov.3,
"Secretary Tiu-Laurel's leadership of Frabelle Fishing Corporation showcases the potential of private enterprises in bolstering our nation's food security, economic growth, and technological advancements in agriculture. His firsthand experience in managing a large-scale operation gives him insights into the intricacies of supply chains, market demands, and global trends," Romualdez said.
The House leader said that such expertise will be "instrumental in fostering partnerships between the government and private entities, bridging gaps, and creating synergies that benefit the agricultural sector as a whole".
The Leyte 1st district representative underscored that the collaboration between the private sector and agriculture is not just about business.
"It's about ensuring that the fruits of economic growth are equitably distributed, reaching the grassroots level and benefiting ordinary Filipinos," he said.
"With a leader who understands both worlds, we can anticipate policies that balance profit with public welfare, ensuring that our farmers and fisherfolk receive fair compensation, access to modern technologies, and opportunities for growth," Romualdez further noted.
He also stressed the importance of having a leader who understands the intricacies of the market while keeping the welfare of ordinary Filipinos at heart, especially in these "challenging times".
"I believe Secretary Tiu-Laurel is that leader, and I look forward to the positive changes he will bring to our country's agricultural landscape," said Romualdez, president of the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) party.
Before Laurel's appointment Friday, President Marcos took on the reins as agriculture chief. He did so as he warned the public of a potential food crisis.
