La Salle’s Kevin Quiambao steered clear of his rivals to win the Most Valuable Player award in a masterful sophomore year in the UAAP Season 86 men’s basketball tournament.
The 22-year-old forward is set to be crowned as the first local MVP since Blue Eagles’ Kiefer Ravena claimed the individual recognition in 2014 and 2015. He is also the first local awardee from La Salle since Don Allado went back-to-back in 1998 and 1999.
On the way to being the season’s best, Quiambao brought the Green Archers back to the finals after a six-year wait under rookie coach Topex Robinson.
In his young collegiate career, Quiambao was in a class of his own and led the race for the MVP award with an exceptional 97.0 statistical points (SP), a huge gap from University of the East’s Rey Remogat, who was way behind with 85.92 SPs.
Quiambao won the Rookie of the Year award in Season 85 following a decent season that saw La Salle suffer a rare Final Four miss.

La Salle is riding on a nine-game surge ahead of its best-of-three championship battle with the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, which was largely thanks to Quiambao’s all-around display in the elimination round.
Quiambao delivered rare two triple-double brilliance in a single season and only had four non-double-double finishes throughout the 14-game period.
The records speak of Quiambao’s impressive form this season, but more than that is a chance to give the Green Archers a shot at the crown which they last won in Season 79.
The 6-foot-7 Quiambao also edged out graduating teammate Evan Nelle (77.53 SPs) who finished third in the individual standings followed by Season 85 MVP UP’s big man Malick Diouf (74.76 SPs).
Meanwhile, UP’s Francis Lopez is set to be hailed as the Rookie of the Year following UE’s Precious Momowei’s suspension due to two unsportsmanlike fouls that led to the disqualification.
La Salle is facing UP at press time in Game 1 of their finals showdown at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
