Francis Libiran soars like a phoenix as he celebrates his 25th anniversary

The noted Filipino fashion designer presents the next chapter of his career with a grand runway show

For years, the phoenix has inspired numerous art in the world. The mythical creature is known for renewing itself by rising from the ashes, making it a symbol of resilience and tenacity. But for noted Filipino designer Francis Libiran, taking inspiration from the fiery bird comes from a personal note as he celebrates his 25th anniversary in the fashion industry this year.

On Nov. 24, celebrities and other personalities gathered to witness Francis’ celebration. Through his “Sterling” event, the designer marked his next chapter and what he has to offer for the next 25 years with a 25-piece collection that’s imbued with the beauty and the spirit of the phoenix.

“The phoenix, as a symbol, beautifully mirrors my journey in the fashion industry. Much like this mythical creature's ability to rise from the ashes, my career has been marked by resilience and constant reinvention,” Francis told Manila Bulletin Lifestyle. “Over the years, I've faced challenges and embraced change, always emerging stronger and more refined. The phoenix encapsulates the transformative nature of my experience, symbolizing not just survival but a continuous journey of growth and renewal.”

The Grand Ballroom of City of Dreams Manila was transformed into an arena, ready for the couture works of Francis. Like a juvenile phoenix ready to take flight, stunning garbs in gold, silver, black, and red slowly emerged on the stage, glittering as the light kissed them. Delicate silks, intricate lace, and embellishments were used in making the looks. Present on the runway was his signature art deco design element. What made them new was his exploration of new silhouettes, producing ensembles that were dramatic, whimsical, and romantic.

“The creation of The Phoenix Collection was a meticulous process that spanned several months. From conceptualization to execution, each piece required dedicated effort and attention to detail,” the designer mused. “Collaboration played a significant role as I worked closely with a team of skilled artisans, craftsmen, and collaborators. Their expertise and passion contributed to bringing the collection to life, infusing it with a richness that goes beyond individual efforts.”

Carving a legacy in the fashion industry for 25 years is no easy task, as Francis confessed. Each day, designers are tested. That’s why having a brave heart, a strong passion, and mental fortitude is a must to make a lasting impact on the industry.

“Staying in the business for this long requires a delicate balance of passion, resilience, and adaptability. It takes a commitment to continuous learning, a deep connection to one's cultural roots, and an unwavering dedication to craftsmanship. The ability to evolve with the times, embrace change, and infuse each collection with a fresh perspective is essential to longevity in the dynamic world of fashion,” Francis said. “This journey has been a remarkable odyssey, and I am excited about the chapters yet to unfold.”
