Held at the APA Hotel & Resort Tokyo Bay Makuhari, the competition, held from Nov. 24 to 28, saw the triumph of Grade 6 student Liam Franco Gocheco of the Xavier School Nuvali in Calamba, Laguna as he emerged as both "Top 1" in the Senior category and "Top 2" overall in the International category.

Grade 8 student Kalel Elijah Lontok of the Sen. Renato Cayetano Memorial Science & Technology High School in Taguig City, was named "Top 1" in the Senior Open category.

Meanwhile, Heal Job Esio, Grade 5 student of the Pangasinan Universal Institute in Dagupan City, was declared "Top 2" in the Japan division and "Top 3" overall in the international category.

During the preliminary round, both Gocheco and Esio won gold medals while Lontok got a silver.

According to MTG COO and co-founder Dr. Simon Chua, there were more than 90 Filipino students who have qualified for the AMO, but only 13 managed to join the trip due to financial and visa problems.

In August, Chua said "they brought home 54 medals from math competitions in Singapore & Hong Kong."

The AMO is spearheaded by the Japanese Ministry of Culture, Education, Sports, Science & Technology and the Arithmetic Society of Japan, among other groups.

Since its inception in 1991, over 180,000 students from all over Asia have taken part in the annual contest. Some 350 students from host Japan, the Philippines, Thailand, India and Singapore took part in the competition.
