Marcos rallies support for renewed peace talks

President Marcos has asked Filipinos to support the resumption of the peace negotiations between the Philippine government and the National (NDF) to realize the vision of unity in the country.

Marcos said this following the signing of the Oslo Joint Communique and a joint statement on Nov. 23, citing the "need to unite as a nation" and address and resolve the reasons for the armed conflict.

"I call upon the wholehearted support of all Filipinos as your government extends, in good faith, our nation’s goodwill to those ready to welcome and embrace our collective vision of peace, national reconciliation, and unity," Marcos wrote in his X (formerly Twitter) account on late Tuesday, Nov. 28.

According to Marcos, the government has always advocated and striven for a peaceful, prosperous, and unified country.

"Today, I firmly believe that we have taken a bold, meaningful, and optimistic step toward the fulfillment of this aspiration for all Filipinos," he said.

Based on their Joint Statement, the government and the NDF agreed to a principled and peaceful resolution of the armed conflict to face the challenges such as "serious socioeconomic, environmental, and foreign security threats" as a unified nation.

According to Peace Adviser Carlito Galvez, the joint statement was the result of a series of informal discussions held in the Netherlands and Norway starting in 2022.

The discussions and the signing were facilitated by the Royal Norwegian Government (RNG) and witnessed by RNG Special Envoy Kristina Lie Revheim.

Galvez said that the deal signified that both parties were "very firm and committed" to establishing the framework agreement which will be the basis for the crafting of the final peace agreement.

The agreement was reached after President Marcos last week granted amnesty to rebels and insurgents through numerous proclamations.
