House Secretary General Reginald Velasco has denied allegations the Speaker Martin Romualdez has a P1.8-billion travel fund, as claimed in a program over television network SMNI.
"Recent reports circulating about a P1.8 billion travel fund allocated to Speaker Martin Romualdez are completely unfounded and categorically false," Velasco said in a statement on Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 28.
"The Office of the Secretary General can confirm that such bloated amount for the Speaker’s travel expenses does not exist," he stressed.
Velasco is the highest-ranked civilian official in the 300-plus strong House of Representatives, which Romualdez heads.
"These allegations are a clear example of fake news, designed to mislead the public and tarnish through reputation of the Speaker and the entire House of Representatives as an institution," Velasco said.
He added that the lower chamber is 'dedicated to serving the nation with integrity and will continue to focus on our legislative duties, rather than being distracted by unfounded rumors and misinformation".
"We urge the public and the media to exercise caution and verify facts enforce sharing such baseless claims. The House of Representatives is committed to transparency and accountability," Velasco further said.
The disparaging comments about the House chief in connection with the alleged P1.8-billion travel fund were made on the SMNI program titled “Laban Kasama Ang Bayan".
