Foundation vs hunger, malnutrition launched in Parañaque

A foundation that seeks to address hunger and malnutrition among thousands of Parañaque residents was launched on Monday, Nov. 27, at the Heritage Hotel in Pasay city.

 

The foundation, “Isang Plato Sagot Ko (IPSK) Foundation, Inc.,” headed by its president, Aileen Claire Riate-Olivarez, said it aims to provide food support and assistance programs, a strong community response to disasters, the participation of beneficiaries in nutrition education training and programs, and the empowerment of communities to sustainably produce their own food.

 

As part of its endeavor, Riate- Olivarez said the IPSK will mobilize a network of hunger warriors and champions who will promote food justice and equitable access to life-improving assistance and resources for marginalized and vulnerable communities.

 

“We will hit the ground running as soon as possible to reach out to many poor Paranaquenos who are in need of immediate assistance,” said Riate-Olivarez, adding the foundation plans to have an initial rollout of its feeding program on January 27, 2024.

 

Riate-Olivarez said when she assumed the post of City Nutrition Action Officer (CNAO) following the election of her husband, Mayor Eric Olivarez, she witnessed the problem of malnutrition and hunger during her routine visits to the city’s various barangays.

 

She said based on the latest data, there were 1,487 underweight children and adult residents, while 2,351 are stunted, 304 severely wasted, and 1,012 overweight.

 

“I have personally witnessed the plight of families, especially children and the elderly, battling hunger and malnutrition. This has sparked a deep responsibility within me to do something to address this problem,” said Riate-Olivarez.

 

Witnessing the hunger and malnutrition, Riate-Olivarez said she immediately buckled down to work with the assistance of her sister, Peggy Ann Riate-Sienes, who is also Vice President of the IPSK by reaching out to professionals, philanthropists, experts in various fields, and other like-minded individuals, who all agreed to extend a helping hand.
