Quezon City Police District (QCPD) Director Brig. Gen. Redrico Maranan said on Monday, Nov. 27, that the QCPD filed multiple criminal charges against Lt. Col. Mark Julio Abong who was arrested after he allegedly fired his gun outside a bar in Barangay Laging Handa in the city on Sunday, Nov. 26.

“Naifile na natin kahapon ang ibat-ibang kaso laban kay PLTCOL Abong before the Quezon City Prosecutors Office wherein ACP (Assistant City Prosecutor) CLAUDETTE MICHELLE T SAQUING, the duty Inquest Prosecutor evaluated the pieces of evidence presented (We filed various cases against PLTCOL Abong before the Quezon City Prosecutors Office yesterday, wherein ACP (Assistant City Prosecutor) CLAUDETTE MICHELLE T SAQUING, the duty Inquest Prosecutor evaluated the pieces of evidence presented,") Maranan said.

Lt. Col. Abong, 40, assigned to the Philippine National Police (PNP) Legal Service, and a resident of Brgy. Manresa, Quezon City, was charged with illegal discharge of firearm, Republic Act 10591(Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Acr), violation of Omnibus Election Code, physical Injury, slander by deed, and disobedience of person in authority.

He was collared by operatives of QCPS Kamuning Station (PS 10) after they received reports of an indiscriminate firing incident outside Ralyoz bar at around 1 a.m. on Sunday.

Reports showed that before the incident, the policeman went to the bar and demanded to talk to its manager. Police said that he was approached by and had a conversation with a waiter.

The QCPD said that during their conversation, Abong grabbed the necktie of the waiter and went outside the establishment where he fired his gun twice. He also pointed it towards one of his companions.

It will be recalled that Abong was dismissed by the Quezon City People's Law Enforcement Board (PLEB) in March this year after he got involved in a hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of a tricycle driver in the city in August 2022. He previously served as the chief of the QCPD Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit chief.

"Si PLTCol Abong ay pansamantalang nakakulong ngayon sa CIDU. (PLTCol Abong is temporarily detained at the CIDU). We assure the public that the QCPD will thoroughly implement the law regardless kung sino po ang involved as it will not tolerate misdeeds in the PNP", Maranan said.

On Sunday, Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte called on the PNP and the QCPD to conduct a quick and thorough investigation into the incident.
