For the second straight game, Barangay Ginebra barely survived another tough stand from a cellar dwelling team, pulling off a 90-87 squeaker against Blackwater in the 2023 PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City on Sunday, Nov. 26.

Crucial conversions from Tony Bishop and Christian Standhardinger kept the Kings afloat in front of the valiant effort of the Bossing in the waning minutes before a well-executed defensive stand in the final play sealed the deal for the defending champions.
It was the second straight win for the Kings, who seemed to be playing with fire after allowing teams that are currently struggling and on a losing streak, staying too close for comfort before pulling off the big stops down the stretch.
Ginebra, which also narrowly escaped the still winless Rain or Shine, 107-102 just last Friday, even started out flat in the contest, trailing by as many as 17 points in the first half.
Bishop showed the way for the Kings with 25 points and 11 rebounds while Maverick Ahanmisi continued to ease his way as his new team’s top weapon adding 20 points, six assists and five rebounds.
Standhardinger posted a double-double of 16 points, 12 rebounds and six assists in an all-around effort as Ginebra got a share of the second spot with Phoenix and Meralco with identical 3-1 records.
With the Bossing shooting the lights out in the first half, the Kings tightened up their defense in the last two quarters to wrest control of the contest. Even with the lead on its hands though, Ginebra couldn’t really put enough separation against the hard-fighting Blackwater which even came within one, 86-85.
A pair of Bishop free throws gave Ginebra a three-point buffer before Blackwater import Chris Ortiz and Standhardinger traded baskets in the ensuing possessions. The Kings had several chances to deliver the killing blows but came up dry on their last few executions inside the final minute.
Blackwater, however, failed to capitalize with Ortiz coming up short with his three-point attempt that could have sent the game to an extra period.
Ortiz paced his team with 20 points and 10 rebounds while RK Ilagan and Troy Rosario had 15 apiece for the Bossing who just absorbed its fourth-straight loss.
