UAAP women's basketball: UST ends UP run, sets up finals series with defending champion NU

University of Santo Tomas ended University of the Philippines dream run, 87-84, to set up a finals grudge match with defending champion National University in the UAAP Season 86 women’s basketball tournament on Saturday, Nov. 25, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The Growling Tigresses brushed off a late Fighting Maroons comeback to march on to the finals for the first time since 2019.
Kent Pastrana led the balanced attack for UST with 18 points highlighted by a 4-of-6 shooting from the outside, while four other Tigresses finished in double figures.
Brigette Santos and Nikki Villasin chipped in 14 and 12 points, respectively, while Tantoy Ferrer and Ana Tacatac had 11 points each.
In their first Final Four encounter, UST, which was armed with the twice-to-beat incentive, squandered a 20-point advantage which eventually led into a UP win in overtime.
This time, the Growling Tigresses made sure to not commit the same mistakes managing to keep a huge gap throughout the second half en route to the victory.
The España-based squad last faced the eight-peat seeking NU side in the finals in Season 82.
League-record holder for most rebounds Favour Onoh led the way for the Fighting Maroons with 21 points and 14 rebounds, while Kaye Pesquera added 20 markers as the 15-year finals wait for the Fighting Maroons continues.
