Promoting the Maharlika Investment Fund (MIF) might not have been part of the main agenda of the just-concluded 31st Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum (APPF31), but team Philippines still found a way to "sell" it to the foreign participants.
According to House Speaker Martin Romualdez, he was able to promote the MIF "on the sidelines" of the event, which was held the past three days at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City.
“Sa sidelines po, siyempre binanggit din natin na meron tayong napasa na ngayon at batas na po na Maharlika Investment Corporation (MIC),” Romualdez told reporters on Saturday, Nov. 25 after delivering the closing remarks at the forum.
(Of course, we also mentioned on the sidelines of the event that we have a law on the Maharlika Investment Corporation that we have just passed.)
The MIC is the body tasked to oversee the MIF, which is the Philippines' first ever sovereign wealth fund.
To say that the Marcos administration is aggressively pushing for the success of the MIF is an understatement; President Marcos has made it a point to woo investors to it whenever he goes overseas.

Marcos recently sworn into office Rafael Consing Jr. as the first president and chief executive officer of the MIC.
Romualdez, the co-chair of the APPF31, says that the existence of a sovereign wealth fund shows that the Philippines has a vibrant economy.
“Kaya siyempre nakikita nila na maipagmamalaki itong napakagandang bansang Pilipinas, napakasigla ng ating ekonomiya," he said.
(That's why they can see that the Philippines is worth boasting about, its economy is very vibrant.)
A total of 158 members of parliament from 19 countries attended the conference in person.
