The Philippine National Police (PNP) has expressed support to the decision of President Marcos to grant amnesty to former rebels and insurgents, including the former members of the New People’s Army (NPA) and Muslim secessionist groups.
In a statement, PNP chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda, Jr. said the President’s Proclamations 403, 404, 405, and 406 are essential part of the comprehensive peace initiatives.
“These actions, which reflect the administration’s unwavering commitment to national reconciliation and unity, represent a significant step towards bringing individuals involved in insurgent or rebel groups back into the fold of the law,” the statement read.
“We firmly believe that amnesty initiatives for former members of such groups, within the bounds of the legal framework, prioritize public safety and contribute significantly to fostering peace and stability in our nation,” it added.
Acorda said the extension of amnesty through established executive orders and proclamations underscores the government’s goal to upholding the rule of law while facilitating the peaceful reintegration of individuals into society.
He said this is also being pursued by the PNP on the aspect of maintaining peace and order across the country.
“The Philippine National Police stands firmly behind efforts that promote lawful reintegration, urging individuals to participate in processes of reconciliation and rehabilitation,” said Acorda.
“Our commitment to safeguarding all citizens remains resolute as we actively support initiatives that foster harmony and understanding within our communities,” he added.
