115 Pinoys remain in West Bank after arrival of 5 in PH—embassy

A total of 115 Filipinos remain in the West Bank after the arrival in the Philippines of the second batch of five repatriates on Friday, Nov. 24, the Philippine Embassy in Jordan said.

According to the embassy, the latest batch of Filipinos who returned home consisted of two overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and a family of three.

The five Filipinos had successfully crossed West Bank to Jordan amid the ongoing armed conflict between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

They were given send-off by Philippine Ambassador to Jordan Wilfredo Santos and Labor Attaché Armi Evangel Peña at Queen Alia International Airport in Amman last Thursday.

A separate embassy team assisted the Filipinos at the Allenby Border crossing at the Israeli side prior to their entry to Jordan, where they were issued transit visas.

“The Philippine Embassy in Amman made appropriate representations with the authorities to facilitate their entry from the West Bank to Jordan,” the embassy said.

The Philippine embassy in Jordan has concurrent jurisdiction over the State of Palestine.

This was the second repatriation of Filipinos from the West Bank undertaken by the embassy after two Filipino workers returned home in the Philippines on Nov. 8.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has raised Alert Level 2 over West Bank following the “real threats to the life, security, and property of Filipinos” arising from internal and external threats to the host country.

However, the embassy said there are still 115 Filipino who are in the West Bank, including nine nuns, 21 OFWs and 85 resident Filipinos.

Violence in the Israeli-occupied West Bank has run for more than 15 years, but it has surged further recently because of the Israel-Hamas war.

“The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza has led to a corresponding increase in the level of violence in the West Bank and made the five Filipinos, consisting of two OFWs and a family of three, to decide to return to the Philippines," the embassy said.
