Globe intensifies operations vs cable theft

Globe Telecom Inc. is intensifying its operations in cooperation with local law enforcement to arrest individuals involved in cable theft incidents.

Globe Enterprise and Corporate Operations (ECOPS) Head Gerardo Recio said by joining forces with local agencies, the telecommunication company is "not just combating cable theft, [but] safeguarding the very connections that bind our community together."

“At Globe, we deeply value the trust our customers place in us. Every cable represents a lifeline for someone – be it for work, learning, or staying in touch with loved ones," he added.

As part of its campaign, the telecommunication firm stated that four individuals were caught by police in Manila last Sept. 20 for stealing 200 pairs of innove copper cable wires, approximately 28 meters long.

The suspects identified as Edwin Zulueta, Kyle Epola, Joenel Caparas, and Jennerold Ellore were arrested at M.H. Del Pilar Street in Malate, Manila, and detained at the Manila Police District (MPD) Station 5.

Globe said the theft affected four circuits serving banks, clinics, and an electronic store in the area.

Another suspect was nabbed by the MPD along Maria Orosa Street corner UN Avenue in Manila. Recovered from him were 200 pairs of multi-pair cables that are around 12.5 meters long.

Globe's services were disrupted in six circuits in the area including banks and clinics.

Last Oct. 10, a man identified as Jayson Picardo was arrested after he was found cutting and stealing 100 pairs of innove copper cable wires, measuring 21 meters in length, at the junction of UN Avenue and General Luna.

Nine circuits were affected servicing banks, groceries, and clinics.

Police also confiscated a steel saw in the possession of the suspect.

To dissuade further cable theft, Globe is replacing copper wires with fiber optics, which has no resale value. Through the fiber optics, more reliable internet connectivity is expected.

For the first half of 2023, there have been a total of 1,181 cable theft incidents. In 2022, 1,811 cases were logged.
