Sarangani town placed under state of calamity due to M6.8 quake

The municipality of Glan in Sarangani province was placed under a state of calamity due to the effects of last week's magnitude 6.8 earthquake.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Wednesday, Nov. 22, that a total of 3,712 families or 16,360 individuals were affected by the Nov. 17 earthquake, the epicenter of which was located in Sarangani, Davao Occidental.
The strongest intensity, Intensity VII, was felt in Glan, Sarangani where around 2,300 homes were damaged.
Five of the nine fatalities were also recorded in Sarangani, including four in Glan. There were 85 persons injured in the municipality of Glan.
The declaration enables the local government to access its calamity fund to fast-track the recovery efforts in heavily-hit barangays.
Glan Mayor Victor James Yap Sr. said the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has assisted the local government in providing relief items to the quake-hit residents.
"Kailangan po namin na maipabalik 'yung tayo ng bahay nila considering na nasira 'yung mga bahay. Even those partially damaged na hindi matirhan they're staying with friends and relatives so kailangan natin matulungan maipabalik na maitayo 'yung bahay nila para mastart ulit sila ng kanilang pamumuhay (We need to rebuild the destroyed homes. even those partially damaged houses cannot be used and the people are staying with their friends and relatives so we need to help them rebuild their homes for them to restart their lives)," Yap said in a television interview with ANC.
