The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said a 6.1-magnitude offshore earthquake struck Davao Occidental at 10:48 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 22.
The earthquake had its epicenter 413 kilometers (km) southeast of Balut Island in the municipality of Sarangani, in the province of Davao Occidental.
It occurred at a depth of 173 km beneath the epicenter.
The earthquake was initially measured by Phivolcs at 5.8-magnitude, but this was later revised to 6.1-magnitude.
It was felt at Intensity II (slightly felt) Glan, Alabel, Malapatan, Malungon, and Kiamba in Sarangani province and in Tupi, Tampakan, Koronadal City, and General Santos City and T’boli in South Cotabato.
It was “scarcely perceptible” at Intensity I in Polomolok, Surallah, and Lake Sebu in South Cotabato and in Maasim and Maitum in Sarangani.
Phivolcs’ instruments also recorded the quake at Intensity II in Don Marcelino, Davao Occidental; Malungon, Glan, Alabel, and Kiamba in Sarangani; Tupi and T’Boli in South Cotabato; and Intensity I in Maitum, Sarangani and General Santos City and Lake Sebu in South Cotabato.
Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.
However, it does not expect aftershocks to occur.
