MVP frontrunner Kevin Quiambao and big man Mike Phillips were feeling fulfilled to have played their parts in De La Salle’s Final Four bid in the UAAP Season 86 men’s basketball tournament.
Quiambao and Phillips can momentarily heave a sigh of relief as the Green Archers are now armed with the twice-to-beat bonus heading into the semifinals against the National University Bulldogs on Saturday, Nov. 25.

Both key players were absent in La Salle’s knockout match against Adamson last season which saw them come out the losing side.
Quiambao, at the time, tested positive for Covid-19 and hadn’t completed the seven-day quarantine protocol in time for the scheduled game, while Phillips had to be rushed to the hospital as he was also under the weather.
With a chance to prove themselves in the semifinal, the La Salle big men couldn’t have been more grateful for the opportunity.
“Siyempre andyan pa rin ‘yong (bitter taste) na hindi nakapasok sa Final Four last season. We just really tried to use that as experience, mistakes stay mistakes if you don’t learn from them. So, we just try to keep this momentum going, lahat ng tinuturo ni coach sa amin really is coming to fruition now,” said Phillips.
“Like Kevin said, for us to move forward, we just really have to trust coach and his system. Makikita niyo lahat ng work ni coach Topex (Robinson) behind the scenes and from the whole coaching staff.”
“I’m glad I have these coaches and these players that’s gonna help us grow and use that experience as far as we can.”
La Salle capped its eight-game winning streak against archrival Ateneo last week and eventually moved up to the second seed behind University of the Philippines FIghting Maroons.
“Sobrang saya na nakaabot kami ng Final Four ngayon knowing na kaming dalawa nga ni Mike hindi pa nakapaglaro against Adamson (last year). Simula nung hinawakan ni coach Topex tong program na to talaga ‘yong level umangat and kita mo naman day by day paano sita magturo and paano niya kami i-handle,” said Quiambao.
“Credit din sa lahat ng coaching staff lalong lalo na sa strength and conditioning namin kasi last season ang daming may injury sa amin. Ngayon manageable lahat and talagang nag-stick lang kami sa system. Learning process andoon pa rin,” he added.
The 22-year-old forward towed the Green Archers to their undefeated second-round campaign, finishing the elimination with a double-double average.
Quiambao only had four non-double-double games this season to clear reigning MVP Malick Diouf of the individual recognition.
