
Thousands of homes in Davao Region (Region 11) and Soccsksargen (Region 12) were damaged and many residents were rendered homelss due to the magnitude 6.8 earthquake that hit Davao Occidental and parts of Mindanao, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said Tuesday, Nov. 21.
After an initial damage assessment following the Nov. 17 quake, a situational report from the NDRRMC said that a total of 1,544 houses were damaged in Davao Occidental, South Cotabato, and Sarangani.
Of the number, 1,387 were partially damaged while 157 were totally damaged.
Meanwhile, the death toll remained at nine: five in Sarangani, three in General Santos City, and one in Davao Occidental. There were 13 individuals also injured due to the quake.
The number of affected individuals also increased to 3,696 families composed of 16,203 individuals in 53 barangays.
There were three roads in Region 12 that were still impassable to motorists due to a landslide. These were the Poblacion Road and New Dumangas Road in the municipality of T'boli and the Tampakan Road in the municipality of Tampakan all in South Cotabato.
The NDRRMC led by Assistant Secretary Hernando M. Caraig Jr, Civil Defense Deputy Administrator for Operations, extended housing assistance, tent kits, food packs, and other relief items to affected residents in Regions 11 and 12 on Monday, Nov. 20, to alleviate their suffering.
