Bong Revilla urges public: Cultivate a culture of respect on the road

Sen. Ramon "Bong" Revilla, Jr., has called on the public to cultivate a culture of respect on the road.

“Kailangan nating magtulungan upang magkaroon ng kultura ng respeto at paggalang sa lansangan. At isa ngang hakbang para diyan ay ang ginagawa natin ngayong araw (We need to help each other to create a culture of respect and courtesy on the road. One of those steps is what we're doing today)," Revilla said.  

The senator mentioned the importance of respect among road users as he took part in the celebration of the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims in a commemorative event organized by the Motorcycle Philippines Federation (MCPF). 

"We will be seeing road safety techniques and hopefully learn from the experience. Gamit naman ang mga mapupulot at matutunan natin, magkakaroon tayo ng pagkakataon na palaganapin ang tamang kultura sa paggamit ng lansangan (Using what we get and learn, we can have a chance to promote the righ culture in using roads),” he said.

More than 4,000 riders were invited to join the program on Sunday, Nov. 19 which commenced with a motorcade which started at President Diosdado Macapagal Boulevard in Pasay City and ended in Strike Gymnasium in Bacoor City, Cavite where the program proper was held.

World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims is an annual international day being observed every third Sunday of November each year to pay tribute to the victims of road crash incidents. Further, it aims to promote awareness on road safety and to call for action to reduce road casualty.

In his speech, Revilla highlighted the importance of road safety promotion and education to truly honor the demise of road crash victims.

“Magkaakibat po ito sapagkat sa pamamagitan lamang ng (These go hand-in-hand because only through) road safety promotion and education natin tunay na madadakila ang mga binawian ng buhay dahil sa mga aksidente sa lansangan (can we really honor those who died from road accidents). The only way to honor and memorialize victims is to take the necessary steps so that there will be no more victims in the future,” he said.

The senator also recalled the passage of Republic Act No. 10054 or the “Motorcycle Helmet Act of 2009” which he authored to mandate all motorcycle riders, including drivers and back riders, to wear standard protective helmets at all times while driving.

“Dahil sa batas na ‘yan ay nakita natin ang pagbaba ng insidente ng pagkamatay ng mga rider na nai-involve sa mga vehicular crashes (Because of that law, we saw a dip in deaths of riders involved in vehicular accidents). While there is no exact figure on how much the severity and mortality rate has dropped in the past 14 years, it is estimated to be 37% effective in preventing fatal injuries to motorcycle operators and 41 percent effective for motorcycle passengers. Helmets also reduce the risk of severe brain injury by 70 percent,” the solon mentioned.

At the end of the program, Revilla was awarded with the recognition of being MCPF’s Ambassador for Motorcycle Road Safety and as a Road Safety Warrior.
