Magnitude-5.2 quake jolts Samar --- Phivolcs


A magnitude-5.2 quake jolted Samar at 12:57 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 20, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs.)

Phivolcs said the earthquake which occurred at a depth of 72 kilometers had an epicenter located 15 km southeast of Calbiga, Samar.

The tremor was felt at Intensity V (strong) in the City of Borongan, Eastern Samar; and in Calbiga and City of Catbalogan, Samar.

It was also felt at Intensity IV (moderately strong) in Balangiga, Balangkayan, and Maydolong, Eastern Samar; Abuyog, Alangalang, Babatngon, Carigara, Dagami, Dulag, Jaro, La Paz, Mahaplag, Mayorga, Palo, Pastrana, Santa Fe, Tabontabon, Tanauan, Tolosa, and Tunga, Leyte; and City of Tacloban.

Phivolcs said the earthquake was felt at Intensity III (weak) in Hernani, Llorente, and Mercedes, Eastern Samar; Burauen, Julita, Kananga, and Leyte, Leyte; Basey, City of Calbayog, Marabut, and Villareal, Samar; Hinunangan, Silago, and Sogod, Southern Leyte.

It was also slightly felt at Intensity II in Biliran, Cabucgayan, Culaba, and Naval, Biliran; Can-Avid and Guiuan, Eastern Samar; Albuera, Bato, City of Baybay, Calubian, Capoocan, Hilongos, Hindang,

Inopacan, Isabel, Palompon, and Villaba, Leyte; Ormoc City; Rosario, Northern Samar; Daram, Hinabangan, Jiabong, Pinabacdao, San Jorge, San Jose De Buan, San Sebastian, Santa Margarita, Talalora, and Tarangnan, Samar; and in Malitbog and Tomas Oppus, Southern Leyte.

Its instruments also recorded Intensity V (strong) in the City of Catbalogan, Samar; Intensity IV (moderately strong) in Can-Avid, Eastern Samar; and Abuyog, Alangalang, Carigara, and Dulag, Leyte; Intensity III (weak) in the City of Cebu; Palo, Leyte; Basey, and Marabut, Samar; Hinunangan, and Sogod, Southern Leyte; Intensity II (slightly felt) in Talibon, Bohol; Culaba, Maripipi, and Naval, Biliran; Albuera, Burauen, Isabel, Kananga, and Leyte, Leyte; Ormoc City; Rosario, Northern Samar; and Intensity I (scarcely perceptible) in Bulusan, Sorsogon; Argao, Asturias, Danao City, and City of Talisay, Cebu; Villaba, Leyte; Malitbog, Southern Leyte; Initao, Misamis Oriental; City of Surigao, Surigao Del Norte.

Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

Phivolcs warned the public of possible aftershocks from the earthquake while it said there are "no damages" to be expected.
