PNP, transport agencies brace for return of millions of Filipinos after BSKE, 'Undas' break
Authorities are now bracing for the return of millions of Filipinos who took advantage of the long weekend brought by the conduct of the barangay elections and the observance of the All Saints’ and All Souls’ Days, or Undas.
Col. Jean Fajardo, spokesperson of the Philippine National Police (PNP), said the police assistance desks they set up in sea and airports, as well as in the bus terminals and other places of convergence, will remain until such time that those who went to their hometowns and went on vacation go back especially in Metro Manila and other urban areas.
“’Our personnel will remain manning our police assistance desks until Sunday and Monday, the time when the last batches of travelers are expected to return to their homes and workplaces, especially in the metropolis,” said Fajardo.
Fajardo said police forces will also remain on heightened alert until Monday, Nov. 6, to ensure the safety and security of the travelers.
The last day of PNP’s highest security alert status will be on Thursday, Nov. 2, to give all the policemen the opportunity to rest and be with their family after a long duty that started last week as part of the preparations for the barangay elections.
“But the commanders on the ground are given the discretion to determine if there is still a need to maintain the full alert status. On the part of the National Headquarters, we will remain on heightened alert until Monday as part of the security measures for the return of those who went to the provinces and those who went on vacation,” said Fajardo.
The Land Transportation Office (LTO), for its part, has earlier ordered all its regional directors to ensure the road worthiness of buses through inspection of vehicles in bus terminals in their respective areas.
The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) are now also anticipating the influx of passengers in all ports across the country as the end of the long weekend nears.
PPA General Manager Jay Daniel Santiago said the “No Leave” policy which he issued will remain in effect until Nov. 6.
The PPA is expecting more than 1.4 million passengers in various ports across the country for the exodus and return of Filipino travelers.
As of Nov. 1, the agency reported that it has recorded a total of 1,097,036 passengers since Oct. 27, with the ports in Batangas, Mindoro, Panay/Guimaras. Bohol and Negros Island recording the most number of passengers.
“We are now preparing for this to ensure the safety and comfort of our kababayan. With the current figure, we expect that we will be exceeding the 1.4 million passengers estimate for this particular long weekend,” said Santiago.
The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) is now also focusing on the return travel of Filipinos both from domestic and international flights.
In a statement, the MIAA said it is focusing not only in ensuring the safety of passengers but to make sure that the flights are on time.
“The NAIA (Ninoy Aquino International Airport) terminals have efficiently handled a significant volume of passengers, processing a total of 732,573 during the first six days of Undas 2023,” the statement read.
“With this remarkable progress, we remain firmly on track to achieve the projected goal of accommodating 1.2 million passengers over the 10-day period,” it added.
