Magnitude 5.6 quake strikes Eastern Samar


The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded a magnitude 5.6 earthquake in Eastern Samar on Thursday, Nov. 2.

Phivolcs said the quake's epicenter was located 76 kilometers northeast of Hernani town. It was recorded at 2:50 p.m. with a depth of 7 kilometers.

In its initial bulletin, Phivolcs said the tremor was recorded at magnitude 6.1.

Intensity V (strong) was recorded in Hernani and Llorente, Eastern Samar.

Intensity IV (moderately strong) was recorded by Phivolcs in Gen. MacArthur, Balangkayan, Maydolong, Salcedo, and Borongan City in Eastern Samar.

Intensity III (weak) was observed in Quinapondan, San Julian, Sulat, Taft, Mercedes, Guiuan, Giporlos, Lawaan, and Balangiga, Eastern Samar; Tacloban, Leyte.

Intensity II (slightly felt) was recorded in Can-avid, Dolores, Oras, San Policarpo, Eastern Samar; Palo, Tanauan, Dulag, Babatngon, San Miguel, Pastrana, Barugo, Carigara, Tabontabon and Julita, Leyte; Basey and Santa Rita, Samar.

Intensity I (scarcely perceptible) was recorded in Mahaplag, Javier, Hilongos, Leyte; Rosario, Northern Samar; and Hinunangan, Southern Leyte.

Phivolcs said aftershocks are expected following the earthquake.

No tsunami threat

Meanwhile, Phivolcs noted there was no “destructive tsunami threat” to the Philippines due to the quake.
