The Manila City Council (MCC) announced on Sunday, Nov. 19, that it passed the "Diabetes Care Resolution" in observance of World Diabetes Day.

The resolution was in line with World Diabetes Day on Tuesday, Nov. 14, which was themed  “Access to Diabetes Care.”

It was filed by First District Councilor Irma C. Alfonso-Juson to emphasize the importance of having equitable access to the required care and information, and guarantee prompt management and treatment of diabetes.

In observance of World Diabetes Day this year, MCC said 7,418 senior high schools in 25 public schools in the city were selected to participate in blood sugar testing during the simultaneous pre-diabetic screening of the Manila Health Department (MHD) on Tuesday.

MCC said that last Tuesday was also the birthday of Frederick Banting, a Nobel Prize Awardee in Physiology in 1923 and one of the key figures in the discovery of Insulin that revolutionized diabetes treatment and saved countless lives.

Diabetes is a chronic- metabolic disorder characterized by elevated blood glucose levels resulting from insufficient insulin production or the body’s inability to utilize insulin effectively.

Through this city resolution, the local government, in collaboration with health organizations and community partners, encouraged the public to participate in activities aimed at raising awareness about diabetes, promoting healthy living, and providing information on diabetes prevention and management.
