The House of Representatives has committed to help look for the funds needed in the rehabilitation and recovery efforts of areas in Southern Mindanao that had been hit by the 6.8-magnitude earthquake.
Thus, said ACT-CIS Party-list Rep. Erwin Tulfo, who personally visited on Sunday, Nov. 19 affected areas in General Santos City and Sarangani province.
Tulfo, the House deputy majority leader for communications, flew to the quake-affected areas upon the order of House Speaker Martin Romualdez. Romualdez is accompanying President Marcos in a two-week trip to the United States (US).
“Ang instruction sa atin ni Speaker Romualdez tiyakin na mahahanapan ng pondo ang rehabilitasyon ng mga nasirang lugar at pagkakaloob ng kabuhayan sa mga naapektuhan,” Tulfo said.
(The Speaker’s instruction is to ensure the availability of funds for the rehabilitation of the damaged areas as well as for the livelihood of the affected residents.)
“Marami talaga ang nasira. Hindi lang mga tulay at kalsada, lumubog rin ang malaking bahagi ng Glan Fish Port. Sa Sarangani pa lang ang initial estimate P200 milyon ang kakailanganin. Hinihintay pa natin ang ibang assessment pati sa General Santos City at Davao Occidental. Ilang daang milyong piso ang kakailanganin natin para sa ating mga kababayan,” he added.
(Truly, there was a lot of damage. Not only on bridges and roads, but a huge part of Glan Fish Port also sunk. In Sarangani alone, the estimate is P200 million would be needed for rehabilitation. We're waiting for the assessment of the damage in General Santos City and Davao Occidental. We will need hundreds of millions pesos for our countrymen.)
In a statement Sunday, Nov. 19, Romualdez told Mindanao folk that the 300-plus strong House won't leave them out in the cold following the strong tremblor.
"I assure the people of Mindanao that the House of Representatives, in partnership with President Bongbong Marcos, would move to mobilize resources needed for rehabilitation and recovery aid in areas greatly affected by the 6.8 magnitude earthquake," the Speaker said.

Upon consultation with House Committee on Appropriations chairman and AKO Bicol Party-list Rep. Zaldy Co, Tulfo said the House leadership will coordinate with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to tap its Quick Response Fund (QRF) for reconstruction and rehabilitation programs and repair and replacement of damaged infrastructure facilities.
Tulfo said Romualdez, who joined President Marcos during the recently concluded Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in the US, has been giving out instructions after he provided comprehensive updates on the status of the affected areas.
The deputy majority leader also led the distribution of relief packs from the Office of the Speaker and Tingog Party-list at Glan Municipal Gymnasium.
Present during the distribution were Sarangani Governor Rogelio "Ruel" Pacquiao and Sarangani lone district Rep. Steve Chiongbian Solon.
Tulfo said the Speaker and Tingog's offices would also distribute construction materials for individuals whose homes were damaged by the earthquake, which happened on Friday.
