Why do 'strong to great' earthquakes frequently occur in Sarangani? Phivolcs explains
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Saturday, Nov. 18, said Sarangani, Davao Occidental, and the nearby provinces suffer from earthquakes as they are located in "one of the seismically active regions in the country."

Phivolcs released the updates and background details on earthquakes that Sarangani had experienced after the occurrence of the magnitude-6.8 tremor that rocked the province on Friday, Nov. 17.
"The presence of offshore active faults and trenches, including an unnamed offshore fault east of Davao Occidental and the Cotabato Trench, contributes to seismic activity," said Phivolcs.
"Additionally, there are local faults in proximity, some potentially concealed by recent deposits capable of generating earthquakes ranging from minor to strong magnitudes," it added.
Phivolcs also said between 1917 and 2017, there were already about six "significant" earthquakes ranging from magnitude 5.7 to magnitude 5.8 that jolted Sarangani, Davao Occidental, and its neighboring provinces.
On Apr. 29, 2017, Phivolcs said a magnitude-7.2 quake was the last "damaging" earthquake that was felt in Sarangani, Davao Occidental.
