VP Duterte says gov't help on its way to quake-hit Mindanao

Vice President Sara Duterte, who is the government caretaker while President Marcos embarks on an official visit to the United States, assured Filipinos in quake-hit Mindanao that help is on the way.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, Nov. 18, the official disclosed some details of her meeting with the Response Cluster of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) at the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) in Quezon City.

“Pinangunahan natin ang usapin sa pagtugon ng iba't ibang mga ahensya ng gobyerno para sa ating mga kababayan at lokal na pamahalaan na apektado ng nangyaring lindol (We led the discussions on how different government agencies can respond for our fellowmen and the local governments affected by the earthquake),” she wrote.

“Bilang mga lingkod-bayan, patuloy nating pagtutuunan ng pansin ang pagpapalawak ng ating kakayahan na magbigay ng agarang tulong at rehabilitasyon sa mga apektadong lugar, ‘di lamang ngayon, kundi sa susunod pa na mga disaster (As public servants, let’s continue focusing on expanding our capacities to provide immediate help and rehabilitation to the affected areas, not only today, but for the next disasters).”

The meeting, she said, was called upon by NDRRMC Chairperson and Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro. The Department of Education (DepEd), which the Vice President heads in a concurrent capacity, is also a member of the Response Cluster.

On Friday, Nov. 17, a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck parts of southern Mindanao, with areas in Sarangani, Davao Occidental bearing the brunt of the quake’s impact.

It struck off the coast of Sarangani at 4:14 p.m. Friday and was felt in many areas in Mindanao. Its epicenter was located at 34 km northwest of Sarangani Island with a 72-km depth of focus and tectonic origin.

The OCD said it is now validating reports of seven fatalities due to the quake, which was initially registered at 7.2 magnitude by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) before it was revised to 6.8 magnitude.

Damages to infrastructure, both residential and commercial, and power outages were reported.

The Vice President said she also discussed the possible impacts of two low pressure areas (LPAs) being monitored, as well as how local governments must prepare in case of rain, landslide, and flood.

She added that the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has already reported on the scheduled three-day transport strike starting on Monday, Nov. 20, more than a month before the Dec. 31 PUV consolidation deadline for the government’s PUV modernization program.

Duterte shared that there is “inter-agency coordination” to help and support the commuters.
