De La Salle rolled to its eighth straight win and exacted sweet revenge over defending champion Ateneo, 72-69, to sweep the second round of the UAAP Season 86 men’s basketball tournament on Saturday night, Nov. 18, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

In front of the 14,900 crowd, the Green Archers averted a total collapse in the endgame to improve with an 11-3 record.
La Salle can clinch the second seeding and one of the twice-to-beat semifinal incentives if the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons edge the National University Bulldogs on Sunday, Nov. 19.
MVP frontrunner Kevin Quiambao showcased another all-around display of 14 points, nine rebounds and six assists while Mike Phillips delivered a double-double performance of 10 rebounds and 14 rebounds.
Evan Nelle and Mark Nonoy had 10 markers each.
La Salle stayed ahead for most of the game and held a 64-56 advantage following back-to-back triples from Josh David and Evan Nelle with 5:08 remaining.
But Ateneo retaliated with a 9-2 attack anchored on Jared Brown’s triple to cut its deficit to only one, 66-65.
Chris Koon then committed a turnover in the inbound play as Nelle hit a closely contested jumper at the 1:06 mark.
Although the Blue Eagles fought hard to the last second, the Green Archers came out the better side.
“This is really a surreal feeling playing against Ateneo in this round. We just slug it out with them,” said La Salle coach Topex Robinson.
“We were ahead most of the time, we knew that they were gonna bounce back, they’re gonna fight their way through. What’s important to us is also important to them. I guess we’ve learned from our mistakes during the first time we’ve played them,” he added.
Joseph Obasa’s 21-point outing went for naught as Ateneo slid to an even 7-7 slate.
Despite the loss, Ateneo can still clinch the remaining Final Four slot if Adamson loses to University of the East in their final elimination game of the season.
A victory for the Falcons would set up a playoff match between them and the Blue Eagles for the last semis ticket.
