The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) on Saturday, Nov. 18, expressed its commitment to providing cash aid assistance to families and individuals affected by the recent earthquake in Mindanao.

In an interview during the weekly Saturday News Forum, DSWD Assistant Secretary for Strategic Communications and the agency's spokesperson Romel Lopez confirmed that the DSWD is actively assessing the situation in the severely affected regions through its Regional Field Offices (FOs) and collaborating with other government agencies.
The goal is to identify the needs of the affected individuals, including the families of those who lost their lives or sustained injuries.
"For our fellow Filipinos who have been injured, there are relatives who have died, we can immediately provide our financial assistance that is included in our Quick Response Funds," Lopez said in a mix of English and Filipino.

"We also expect that those in need of assistance are those with damaged houses, whether partially or totally damaged. That is what our Emergency Cash Transfer (ECT) and Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) are prepared for. Our AICS funding is separate. Rest assured that the funds of the DSWD are sufficient. We will assist our fellow citizens in need," he added.
On Nov. 17, a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Mindanao. The quake's epicenter was located 34 kilometers northwest of Sarangani Island, specifically in Sarangani town in the province of Davao Occidental.
The initial recording by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) indicated a magnitude of 7.2 but was later revised to 6.8.

Moreover, aside from providing financial aid, Lopez assured affected families that the DSWD and its Field Offices (FOs) will promptly distribute family food packs (FFPs) and non-food items, including hygiene kits and sleeping kits.

"Expect that the family food packs, relief goods, will reach you," he said.
"Those will last for two to three days if there are five of you in your household, and within three days, expect that DSWD will replenish them," he added.
Currently, the agency maintains P1.43 billion worth of food and non-food items readily available in the agency's disaster response teams nationwide; a P29.16 million Quick Response Fund (QRF) at the DSWD Central Office; and P14.2 million available at DSWD Field Offices Region 10 (Northern Mindanao), Region 11 (Davao), and Region 12 (SOCCSKSARGEN).
