As he is unable to go to Southern Mindanao to assess the damage of the earthquake, House Speaker Martin Romualdez has instead designated Deputy Majority Leader ACT-CIS Party-list Rep. Erwin Tulfo to do the task.
This was announced by the Office of the Speaker on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 18.
The 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Southern Mindanao on Friday, or right in the middle of President Marcos' ongoing trip to the United States (US). Romualdez, leader of the 300-plus strong House of Representatives, is part of his official delegation.
The Speaker believes that the devastation caused by the earthquake requires a comprehensive and rapid response to ensure the safety and well-being of those affected.
"With deep concern and a sense of urgency, we address the impact of the earthquake on Southern Mindanao. Deputy Majority Leader for Communications Erwin Tulfo will assume a crucial role on my behalf, assessing the damage and identifying essential resources to support the affected communities," Romualdez said.
In response, Tulfo affirmed his dedication to the task and expressed gratitude for being entrusted with this responsibility by the Speaker.
“Our focus will be on understanding the immediate needs of the affected areas and ensuring a coordinated and efficient response to aid in the relief and recovery process,” he said.
Tulfo is scheduled to arrive in General Santos City on Sunday morning, Nov. 19. He is actively coordinating with the ground commander of Tingog Party-list for his visit.
The deputy majority leader is scheduled to meet with General Santos City Mayor Lorelie Geronimo Pacquiao and Sarangani Governor Rogelio “Ruel” Pacquiao.
The Office of the Speaker and Tingog Party-list announced late Friday night that they facilitated the release of P20 million worth of aid and 5,000 food packs for those affected by the strong tremblor.
