A senior member of the erstwhile ruling party Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) believes that the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) and the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP) will coalesce down the road.
This, as Surigao del Sur 2nd district Rep. Johnny Pimentel noted the common denominator between Lakas-CMD and PFP--President Marcos.
Asked in a chance interview which between Lakas-CMD and PFP could become the "party of the future", Pimentel said he instead sees a possible joining of forces.
"Well, these parties are both aligned with the adminsitration of PBBM (President Marcos). There could be an alliance," the Mindanaoan said.
House Speaker Martin Romualdez is the president of Lakas-CMD, while Marcos if the chairman.
The country's political landscape is in a peculiar position where the sitting President's party--founded only five years ago--is not tagged as the "ruling party". Meanwhile, the more established Lakas-CMD--the biggest party in the House with 82 members--has actively avoided referring to itself as the ruling party.

But they are practically joined at the hip, with Marcos and Romualdez being cousins. Marcos has also worked closely with Romualdez throughout his term, and has preferred to bring the House leader along for practically all of his important functions here and abroad.
A formal alliance doesn't seem far-fetched under such optics.
"If you recall, several months ago, all political parties signed an alliance with Lakas-CMD. In fact PDP-Laban signed an alliance with Lakas CMD," Pimentel said.

In the succeeding months, dozens of PDP-Laban stalwarts have bolted the party, with most of them going to Romualdez's Lakas-CMD. Pimentel himself said that he would be leaving the party soon.
"But sa tingin ko, both of these parties (Lakas-CMD and PFP), ika nga, magiging administration party (But I think, both of these parties will become the administration party, so to speak)," he added.
PDP-Laban is chaired by former president Rodrigo Duterte.
