On Thursday, Nov. 16, Malinaw na Mata: Bukas na may Pag-asa screened elementary public school students for possible vision problems, which can interfere with learning in school.
In a phone interview with the Manila Bulletin, Hope in Me Club founder Dr. Tina Alberto revealed that some of the children they screened have eye prescriptions as high as 1,600. The kids' visual impairment often goes undetected due to parents' inability to afford eye checkups.
The team has also identified retinopathy and other conditions, some of which might require surgery and need to be referred to the city ophthalmologist.

The current tranche of the program is set to provide 700 free eyeglasses to elementary school students with visual impairment.
Alberto says they hope to continue the program next year to also benefit junior high school and senior high school students in Bacoor.
