LRMC, DENR, Pasay gov’t partner for estero rehab project

The Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC), private operator of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) 1, has established partnerships with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Pasay City local government to rehabilitate waterways near the LRT-1 depot in the city.

The team up is for the implementation of LRMC’s “Enhanced Adopt-A-River/Estero Program,” which has been conducted by the company for eight years to date in collaboration with national and local government units.

DENR – Environmental Management Bureau National Capital Region (DENR EMB-NCR) Office-in-Charge for Environmental Monitoring and Enforcement Division Atty. Linel C. Manayang; DENR EMB-NCR Regional Director Atty. Michael Drake P. Matias; LRMC Head of Health, Safety, Environment, and Quality Department Dr. Louernie F. De Sales; and Pasay City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Supervising Administrative Officer Ronald Rae Salvador recently signed the memorandum of agreement (MOA) for the initiative.

Through the agreement with DENR EMB-NCR, the Estero de Tripa de Gallina, especially the 0.5 specifically the 0.5-kilometer portion, near the LRT-1 Depot in Pasay will be rehabilitated.

The stakeholders will develop and implement a comprehensive program to reduce pollution in the Estero de Tripa de Gallina, and improve water quality.

Some of the activities to be conducted are regular clean-up drives, physical improvements to enable proper waste segregation and disposal, along with health and safety projects.

LRMC previously partnered with the DENR for the rehabilitation of the Estero de Tripa de Gallina back in 2016 through a “Live for the Rivers Movement” Coalition initiative.

Other affiliated members of the past coalition were Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), and the Metro Manila branches of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), Department of Science and Technology (DOST), and Department of Health (DOH).
