1 dead, 5 hurt as modern jeepney overturns in Cebu

CEBU CITY – A 31-year-old call center agent died while five others were injured when the modern public utility jeepney they were riding overturned on a highway in Barangay Basak, Mandaue City, Cebu on Tuesday night, November 14.

Initial investigation showed that the fatality was a resident of Compostela town, northern Cebu.

Police said that the PUJ was headed to Consolacion town, Cebu and tried to overtake another vehicle.

Investigators said that while the PUJ was on the opposite lane, the driver lost control of the wheel and hit a vehicle parked by the road.

The PUJ overturned due to the impact. Passing motorists helped pull out the passengers from the vehicle.

Emergency responders brought the injured passengers to the Mandaue City District Hospital where one of them was declared dead.

The driver was detained at the Basak Police Station 3 pending the filing of charges against him, police said.
