“It is scheduled to be completed in 2028,” said NEDA-6 Director Arecio Casing Jr. during his talk at the regional economic briefing by BDO Unibank and BDO Capital here.
Casing said that the Office of the President has instructed the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to fast-track the approval of the detailed engineering design (DED). “The DED will be awarded next month to the South Korean consultant,” Casing added.
Actual physical construction may start in 2025 and the Panay-Guimaras bridge will be the first to be constructed among those connecting the Visayan islands of Panay, Guimaras, and Negros.
The proposal to connect the three major Visayas islands has been in the drawing board for more than 50 years.
During the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte, the Panay-Guimaras-Negros bridge was among the more than 40 priority projects of the DPWH “Build, Build, Build” program.
