PH votes in favor of UN resolution condemning Israel's settlement in Palestinian territory

​The Philippines has voted in favor of a United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution that has condemned Israel's settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territory of East Jerusalem, and Israel's acts of violence against Palestinian civilians, including children.

The Philippines joined 144 other nations in voting affirmative for a resolution that came after the UNGA Special Political and Decolonization Committee hearing that tackled "Israeli practices and settlement activities affecting the rights of the Palestinian people and other Arabs of the occupied territories."

Seven countries, including Israel and the US, a major Philippine ally, voted against the resolution, while 18 abstained.

The country's vote came after it abstained from voting in an earlier UNGA resolution that called for a humanitarian truce in the fighting between Israel and Hamas, which supposedly stemmed from Israel's occupation of Hamas-controlled Palestinian territory in Gaza.

The recent resolution noted an International Court of Justice (ICJ) decision that concluded that "the Israeli settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (including East Jerusalem) have been established in breach of international law."

It also noted that the Israeli settlement activities involved the transfer of its nationals ​"into the occupied territories, the confiscation of​ land, the forced transfer of Palestinian civilians, including Bedouin families, the​ exploitation of natural resources, the fragmentation of territory and other actions​ against the Palestinian civilian population​,​" among other things.

​There were also actions against the civilian population in the occupied​ Syrian Golan that are contrary to international law,​ it added.

​The resolution members deplored and condemned several Israeli activities in the occupied territory, including the acts of violence against Palestinians and the destruction of their properties and the Israeli expansion of settlements.

The majority of the UN members, through their vote, urged relevant UN bodies to take necessary measures regarding such activities and requested UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to issue a report on the present resolution during the next session.
