House Deputy Majority Leader and Iloilo 1st district Rep. Janette Garin is insisting that kamote or sweet potatoes are the way to go.
Garin, in a statement Monday, Nov. 13, says changing consumption habits in favor of sweet potatoes will cause Filipinos to enjoy both its health and economic benefits.
"Restaurant owners should also opt for sweet potato fries over regular potato fries not only to add a flavorful twist to meals but also to enhance nutritional value," said the lady solon, a former Department of Health (DOH) secretary
"Sweet potatoes are rich in Vitamin A and fiber, promoting eye health and overall well-being," noted Garin.
She made these comments amid Malacañang's call for Congress to help the national government provide Filipinos with cheaper and better quality rice. Rice is the Filipino staple food.

But the Iloilo congresswoman believes that kamote is simply the better alternative.
Garin said that making this simple switch "aligns with the growing emphasis on healthier food choices in the dining industry".
"This increased reliance on sweet potatoes will likely bolster local farmers' livelihoods and contribute to the growth of sustainable agriculture within the community. Walang kamote ang dapat mabulok (No sweet potatoes should go to waste)," she said.
"It is high time to have it implemented in our country," Garin said.
