Last season’s runner-up De La Salle is looking to continue its final push in the UAAP Season 86 women’s basketball tournament.
The Lady Archers briefly stayed alive in the race for the last Final Four slot following their 75-71 escape win over now second seed University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons on Saturday, Nov. 11, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
La Salle hiked its slate to 5-7 as it previously recovered from its 1-6 start, winning four of its last six games in a last-gasp effort to stay in the competition.
However, a looming Ateneo win over Far Eastern University on Sunday, Nov. 12, will eliminate the hopeful La Salle from contention as the former is ahead 7-4 in the standings.
Meanwhile, National University, UP and UST have all secured their place in the Final Four.
It turned out to be a payback of sorts for the Lady Archers who narrowly fell 65-61 to the Fighting Maroons in their previous round encounter.
“For us, it’s just staying alive and fighting for survival in this year’s UAAP,” said Lady Archers coach Cholo Villanueva. “That’s the mentality that we had coming into the game. It showed especially down the stretch when UP was making a run, but we hit timely baskets and we made the winning-impact plays down the stretch. That’s why we were able to win the game.”
“We just wanted to survive. it’s wanting to improve and wanting to survive. We know that UP is one of the top teams ngayon sa UAAP so we were up for the challenge especially the veteran guys — si Lee, si Bettina, si Chuchi, and Bea showed up today,” added Villanueva.
Last season, La Salle ended one of the longest winning streaks in the UAAP as it handed defending champion NU its first loss in nine years, effectively bringing back the Final Four in the women's side.
Lee Sario showed the way for La Salle with a double-double finish of 19 points and 12 rebounds, in turn, spoiling Favour Onoh’s monster double-double of 23 markers and 24 rebounds.
The Fighting Maroons slid to a 9-3 record, good enough to stay in the No. 2 spot for now.
