Red tide warning still up in some parts of Surigao Sur, Norte

BUTUAN CITY (PNA) – The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has warned residents in some coastal areas of Surigao del Sur and Surigao del Norte about the continuing red tide contaminations.

In its bulletin issued Friday, the agency said shellfish collected and tested from the coastal waters of Lianga Bay in Surigao del Sur and San Benito in Surigao del Norte remained positive for Paralytic Shellfish Poison (PSP).

“The PSP or toxic red tide in shellfish collected and tested in said areas are beyond the regulatory limit,” the bulletin stated.

The agency warned that all types of shellfish and Acetes sp., locally known as “alamang,” collected from the affected coastal waters are not safe for human consumption.

It added that fish, squids, shrimps, and crabs are safe for human consumption provided they are fresh and washed thoroughly and the internal organs are removed before cooking.
